Background

KWDT, in collaboration with arche noVa, is implementing the project “Multisectoral Approach to Improve the Resilience and Livelihoods of Fishing Communities in the Mukono and Buvuma Districts of Lake Victoria, Uganda.” This initiative will support 9,850 individuals (3,020 households) across 16 rural fishing communities in Mukono and Buvuma districts.

The project focuses on achieving the following objectives:

Access to Safe Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene: Ensuring the target group has access to improved water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
Human Rights Protection: Enhancing the capacity of the target group to safeguard and exercise their human rights.
Disaster and Poverty Resilience: Strengthening the communities’ resilience to disasters and poverty.
Income Diversification: Supporting and diversifying income opportunities within the target communities.
Health and Nutrition Awareness: Promoting health-related topics and the adoption of balanced diets.

This comprehensive approach aims to improve the overall well-being and sustainability of these vulnerable fishing communities. Poor nutrition remains a major challenge among rural fishing communities, leading to increased susceptibility to diseases. KWDT seeks to engage a Nutrition Education Consultant to develop educational materials on good nutrition, silverfish nutrition, and diet-related diseases. These materials will focus on promoting balanced diets, raising awareness about the nutritional value of silverfish as an affordable and locally available protein source, and addressing common diet-related health concerns. The consultant will ensure that the information is culturally relevant, accessible, and easy to understand, ultimately supporting healthier lifestyles and improved well-being within the 16 KWDT-supported communities.

3. Objective of the Consultancy

The primary objective of this consultancy is to develop high-quality educational materials that provide accurate, culturally relevant, and practical information on key nutrition topics. The topics will be integrated into KWDT’s community engagement activities that include meetings, trainings and dialogues.

4. Scope of Work

This consultant will be responsible for:

a) Develop content on good nutrition, the nutritional benefits of silverfish, and diet-related diseases, including the consequences of inadequate diets.

b) Reviewing existing materials and best practices in health education to ensure alignment with global and national health standards.

c) Incorporate visual elements, including illustrations and expressions, that are appropriate to all users regardless of age, gender, religion and education background

d) Producing final drafts of the educational materials for approval.

e) Translating materials from English and into Luganda.

5. Key Deliverables

The consultant is expected to produce the following deliverables within the agreed upon timeframe:

  • Well-researched and developed educational materials on good nutrition, silverfish nutrition, diet-related diseases and consequences of inadequate diets including links for infographics videos and sources.
  • Final drafts of the materials approved by KWDT before printing.
  • A brief report detailing the process and recommendations for future integration of health and nutrition education within KWDT activities.

Note: The final materials must be engaging, evidence-based, and visually appealing to

ensure maximum effectiveness in educating community members.

6. Duration and Timeline

The consultancy is expected to last 30 days starting from 21st April 2025. Specific deadlines for deliverables will be agreed upon at the start of the contract. The consultant will work closely with KWDT staff to ensure timely completion.

7. Qualifications and Experience

Educational Background

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, Food Science, Community Health, or a related field.
  • A master’s degree in a relevant discipline is an added advantage.

Professional Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in nutrition education, food security, or community-based nutrition interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing nutrition-related educational materials, particularly for low-resource communities.
  • Experience working with women’s groups, rural communities, and community-based organizations to promote healthy eating habits and nutrition awareness.
  • Previous engagement with NGOs, development agencies, or government-led nutrition initiatives is an added advantage.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of public health nutrition challenges in Uganda, particularly malnutrition, diet-related diseases, and food-based solutions for improving nutrition.
  • Knowledge of nutrition-sensitive interventions, including the nutritional value of silverfish and its role in dietary improvement.
  • Familiarity with community nutrition promotion strategies and behavior change communication techniques for encouraging better dietary practices.

Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent research and writing skills to develop clear, culturally relevant, and engaging educational materials.
  • The ability to simplify complex health information into user-friendly content suitable for different literacy levels.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills to collaborate effectively with KWDT staff and community stakeholders.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Luganda is highly desirable to ensure accessibility of materials.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality outputs within the agreed timeframe.
  • Commitment to inclusive and gender-sensitive approaches, ensuring that materials address the needs of vulnerable groups such as women, breastfeeding mothers, and persons with disabilities.

8. Reporting and Supervision

The consultant will report to the KWDT Coordinator and work closely with other

KWDT staff. Regular updates on progress will be required.
